Highgate Cemetery East, London, England

[visited 29 April 2014]

Highgate Cemetery in London is one of the very first garden cemeteries in the United Kingdom and is divided into East and West sections. The former is open to the public generally while the latter, being the oldest and of a more fragile nature, is accessible by both guided and self-guided tour (booking in advance is required).

While there are some truly wonderful sculptures here, especially in the East section,  I have included a number of graves with remarkable epitaphs as well.

For more information see the Wikipedia site as well as the cemetery's official website. Note there is an entrance charge.

Elma Stuart

Elma Stuart née Fraser of Ladhope, Foxboroughshire

Whom for 8 1/2 years George Eliot called by the sweet name of daughter. She was pioneer in England of the Salisbury system of prevention and cure of diseases and author of “What Must I Do to Get Well? and How Can I Keep So?”

What tho’ thy name by no sad lips be spoken and no fond heart shall keep thy memory green. Thou hast left thine own enduring token, for earth is no as tho’ thou ne’er hadst been.

Few leave behind them such a beautiful memory, to be cherished in the hearts of their friends, as long as life lasts.

George Jacob Holyoke

George Jacob Holyoke 1817-1906 co-operator and social reformer

“I have cared more for co-operation than for any other movement in which I have been engaged.”

“Without honesty to principle there can be no progress in public affairs.”

Faithful, consistent, unswerving

A true soldier of liberty he sought and fought for the truth.

Twigg

In Loving Memory of
Gordon John Twigg (Mummy’s Little Angel).
who died April 24th 1921, aged 3 1/2 years.

Perfect little body, without fault
or stain on thee.
With promise of strength and manhood
full and fair!
Though gold and stark and pare
The bloom and the charm of life doth awhile
remain on thee.
Thy mother’s treasure wert though
Alas! no longer
To visit her heart with wondrous joy,
to be
Thy father’s pride - ah he
Must gather his faith together, and his
strength make stronger.

To the memory of Raffe Maynard (1613), Squire, son and heir to John Maynard Esquire

The man thats buried in this tomb, In heavenly Canaan hath a room;
A gentleman of aunitent name,
Who had a wife a virtuous dame,
They lived together in Godly sort forty-five years with good report
When seventy and seven years he had spent
His soul to his redeemer went.
His body by will here lies,
Still harkening for the great assizes
When Christ the judge of quick and dead,
Shall raise him from this earthy bed,
And give him heavens eternal bliss,
To live and reign with saints of his.

To the memory of Margery Rowlat (1547), wife of John Maynard, Esquire

Here lies intomb’d a woman worthy fame,
Whose virtuous life gives honor to her name,
Few were her years she died in her prime,
Yet in the world fulfilled she much time,
Which virtuously she spent providing still
The hungry bellies of the poor to fill,
Unto the God of heaven thrice every day,
With great devotion Saint-like did she pray,
Her prayers were heard God knew her heart’s desire,
And gave her heaven for her eternal hier (?),
Where now she doth enjoy that endless bliss
Which her redeemer purchased for his.

To the memory of Margery Seale (1619), wife of Raffe Maynard, Esquire

Lo here intombed a widow worthy prayers
Who in the fear of God devoutly spent her days,
With charitable alms relieving still the poor,
For empty handed none departed from her door,
A mirror in her time for virtuous of her mind,
A matron for her years, the like is hard to find,
Beloved bewayld (?) of all in life and death was she,
An honor to her sex as any of her degree,
Her body into dust returned here doth sleep,
Her sanctified soul in heaven the angels keep.
Her worthy name still lives by fame, who sounds her prayers
With trumpet clear, till Christ appear her hence to raise.

Robert Maynard the sorrowful son pf his most dear and worthy parents in his duty to their memory erected this monument.

[visited 20 May 2022]

One of the most notable burials in this lush, lovely cemetery in the hills above Oslo is that of painter Edvard Munch who also has his own rather incredible museum along the waterfront.

it told you it was lush -- and a great place to sit and read or watch your baby
